To showcase the many paths of women in science in Luxembourg, and to inspire young girls to pursue their passion for science, the institutions that form Research Luxembourg have joined forces again for the second season of the video series “Women [& Girls] in Science”, in collaboration with MEGA, the Ministry for Equality in Luxembourg. The series launches on 11 February – International Day of Women & Girls in Science – and runs until 8 March – International Women’s Day.
On the FNR website, all videos will be published on the dedicated Women [& girls] in Science page, where Season 1 from 2022 can also be [re]discovered.
RTL Today Lisa Burke show dedicated to Women in Science
To mark the day, in the lead up to Women’s Day on 8 March, Research Luxembourg will release six videos following six female scientists in various stages of their life’s work.
Anyone who knows me knows I love science. And so it’s a delight to host a show dedicated to the UN’s eighth International Women and Girls in Science Day – 11th February. The theme this year is:
“Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance.
I.D.E.A.: Bringing communities Forward for sustainable and equitable development”
Why is it still important to have this conversation and shine a light on women in science? Well, there are many sets of statistics to show that women represent about a third of researchers, and yet only about 12% are members of national science academies. In AI, only one in five professionals are female. There’s a pay gap for female researchers and their career’s tend to be shorter, their work under-represented in high-profile journals and – for whatever reason – fewer women enter managerial positions in science and engineering.

Be brave – Women & Girls in Science 2023
Choosing the path of science and research can have many trajectories. To show a glimpse of what different science journeys can look like, the 6 women featured in this series represent different institutions, scientific focus, backgrounds, and functions. From a PhD candidate, a research facilitator, to research scientists and professors, the stories told in this second season reflect the many options for a career in science and research in Luxembourg. Each video tells a story about a woman in science in Luxembourg, the path they have chosen and why, as well as their message for young girls interested in science.
A successful first season
With more than 215,000 views on Youtube alone and many positive interactions and comments on social media, the success of the first edition of the Women [& Girls] in Science held in 2022 made the shooting of a season 2 bound to happen.

This new collaboration is to be welcomed not only in the sense of the sustainability of the partnership, but also to give a clear signal that science is not an exclusively male domain.
“I am convinced, especially in the context of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, that such female role models will play an important role in the future gender mix in all areas of science. Science can only be modern if it is egalitarian!”, said Taina Bofferding, Minister of Equality between Women and Men.
From 11 February to 8 March
The campaign will be launched on 11 February to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science. On this occasion, an episode of Lisa Burke’s podcast “In Conversation with Lisa Burke”- broadcast every Saturday on RTL Today – will be dedicated to the subject. The programme will feature participants in the campaign as well as members of the Luxembourg research community involved in gender and equality issues, for an exchange of views on various topics related to the position of women in science.
From 11 February with a teaser video presenting the 6 women portrayed in this campaign, to 8 March – International Women’s Day – two videos will be published per week.
